Isabella Colby has always yearned for normalcy. Now that she’s settled in LA, she finally has it. Good friends, a pretty home, and her thriving career as the Palisades’ top skincare specialist are a dream come true. Bella is content until she meets her hunky new neighbor, but her attraction to the blue-eyed cutie is the least of her worries when contacting her long-lost father threatens to destroy her happy life.

Reed McKinley is more than ready to forget the past. His seven-year stint as an NYPD detective nearly got him killed. His wounds have healed and he’s starting over as Ethan Cooke Security’s latest recruit. With sixty-hour workweeks and little time to himself, the last thing on his mind is a relationship. Then he bumps into the gorgeous woman next door.

Reed and Bella become fast friends. Before long, Reed discovers that Bella is keeping dangerous secrets. Bella may have the answers to decades-old questions he’s been searching for. Reed will risk it all to uncover the truth, but he soon realizes that the deeper he digs, the direr the consequences.

The Inspiration Behind Deceiving Bella:

It’s no secret that I’m a crime television junky. I love watching anything that might bring about an idea for another story. Several months ago, I found a series on Netflix about La Cosa Nostra—or the five mafia families of New York. I was immediately drawn to the information I was observing. Within minutes, I knew I wanted to weave together an adventure that would bring Isabella Colby and Reed McKinley face to face with organized crime. I hope you’ll enjoy reading Deceiving Bella as much as I loved writing it.

Read an excerpt from Deceiving Bella:

They kept a slow pace, strolling in silence as the breeze plastered their clothes to their bodies and the constant sound of waves hypnotized, lulling Reed into relaxing by degrees.

“Thanks for coming with me tonight. It’s nice having company.”

He looked at Bella, staring at the fading light playing off her eyes. “The water smells better than a bunch of sweaty guys.”

“Your gym.” Her brow creased ever so slightly as she held his gaze. “What do you do for fun?”

“Work and box.”

“Sounds…like a good time.”

“I like it.”

“Do you smile?”

He frowned. “Huh?”

“I was wondering if you ever smile—or laugh. I haven’t seen you do either since we met.”

He sent her an exaggerated grin.

She laughed.

He smiled for real this time, finding her laughter infectious.

“You do smile. I wasn’t sure if you had some sort of facial paralysis we hadn’t discussed yet.”

He grinned.

“You should do that more often.” She hooked her arm through his.

He almost missed a step as the warmth of her skin met his, surprised by her casual gesture. He wasn’t used to people being so touchy-feely. “I do it plenty.”

“I’ll have to take your word for it.”

How was it possible she smelled even better now that they stood so close? It had to be her hair. “I don’t know what to say to that.”

She stopped abruptly. “Are you seeing anyone?”

He studied her, not sure that he liked where this was going. “No. You interested?”

She shook her head. “You’re not really my type.”

He tried to ignore the direct hit to his ego. “You’re not mine either.”

Another smile warmed her face. “I think we could be great friends, and I like projects—love them, actually.”

His frown returned. “And that means…”

“It means I like you. And I love that you don’t seem to have any interest in getting into my pants.”

Years of concealing any and all facial expressions kept his eyes from popping wide. “Wow.” He ran his hand through his hair, speechless once again. “Okay.”

She laughed. “I’m a big fan of honesty—putting it right out there.”

He chuckled as he settled his sunglasses on top of his head. “Clearly.”

They started walking again.

“There’s something about you that feels…safe.”

He raised his brow, taken aback. He’d been called many things, but this was a first. “Safe?”

She nodded. “Safe. It’s a good thing, but you’re pretty serious. We need to lighten you up. You need to play more.”

“I play plenty. I box.”

She scoffed, “Beating someone’s face in can’t lead you down the road to happiness.”

Her side brushed his with every step. He imagined he should ease away, break their connection, but he liked the way she felt, that she trusted him. “There’s more to boxing than beating someone’s face in.”

She looked at him as if she wasn’t so sure.

“I’ll have to show you—” He glanced over his shoulder when he realized they hadn’t seen Lucy for a while and laughed as the dog lay on her back in the sand with her front paws in the air. “What is she doing?”

“Sunbathing.”

He laughed again, shaking his head. “I’ve never seen anything like that.” His eyes met Bella’s as she stared at him. “What?”

“You have a great laugh.”

To his surprise, he was having a great time. It shocked him further that he liked Bella as much as she seemed to like him. Being here with her was exactly what he’d needed. “How long do you want to stay?”

“The sun sets soon. It’s the best part.”

The sand wasn’t bothering him much, and he couldn’t remember the last time his shoulders felt so loose. “I don’t have a blanket.”

“We can sit on our shoes.” She tossed hers down. “We can plunk ourselves right here.”

Lucy rolled to her side, stood, and ran their way.

He shrugged, dropping his flip-flops to the ground. “I guess this is as good a place as any.”

“It’ll be spectacular.” She took his hand, pulling him down next to her. “You won’t regret it.”

“We’ll have to remember a blanket next time.”

She smiled. “You want to come back?”

He stared ahead, petting Lucy when she curled up next to him, breathing in Bella with each inhalation. “I could see myself doing this again.”

She gave his shoulder a bump. “Good. You can be my beach buddy.”

He nodded, liking the idea. “Yeah, sure.”

“Great.”

“Great.” He crossed his ankles in the sand, his foot brushing Bella’s as they settled in to enjoy the show. It had been too damn long since he watched a sunset.

 The Unofficial Deceiving Bella Soundtrack

I love music! I can’t imagine a world without catchy tunes playing, especially when I’m writing. Music is inspiration. Melodies, beats, and the mood of each song help me portray emotions and feelings as I tell a story. It’s a rare day when I don’t have my headphones in place, bopping my head, while my fingers race across the keyboard. You can listen to the “soundtrack” for each book on my website www.catebeauman.com.

The soundtrack, of sorts, for Deceiving Bella:

  • Favorite Song by Ben Rector
  • Lay It All On Me by Rudimental w/Ed Sheeran
  • Into You by Ariana Grande

  • Truth by Steve Moakler
  • Any Other Name by Thomas Newman

Principal Dancer Lyla Markovik-Avery is always on the go. Grueling practices and endless performances rule her busy days—and things are about to get more hectic. Russia is rolling out the red carpet for their beloved star, despite the string of violent terrorist attacks that have rocked the nation.

Bodyguard Collin Michaels’ life is falling apart. His long-time relationship recently ended. He’s trying to start over, but that’s easier said than done. Luckily, Collin has a new assignment on the horizon: keeping a beautiful ballerina safe for the next three weeks.

Collin finds comfort in Lyla’s easy friendship, but that all changes after a night out on the town. Simple feelings become complicated—something Collin can’t afford, especially when tragedy strikes and Collin realizes Lyla’s caught in the middle of a dangerous plot for revenge.

Collin and Lyla are forced to flee. They need to reach the border before it’s too late, but the odds are stacked against them in a country that wants them dead. With time running out, Collin formulates a risky plan that might be their only chance of making it out alive.

The Inspiration Behind Finding Lyla:

Typically I get my story ideas from crime documentaries or some sort of crime television program, but I can’t say that is the case for Finding Lyla. When I was coming up with ideas for this novel, I knew I wanted to tell a story about a hero that had struggled through some rough times and a heroine that had some unresolved issues of her own, but was soft, strong, and gentle all at the same time. During the summer months, I started paying close attention to the ongoing Russia/US conflict and Lyla and Collin assured me they wanted their story to revolve around an adventure that combined all of these elements together.

Read an excerpt from Finding Lyla:

Collin settled beneath the covers on his temporary bed as the dim glow of city lights radiated through the windows. He reached out, grabbing the remote off the coffee table he’d pushed off to the side, and flipped through several channels, stopping on Sports Center. Scores and updates ticked by on the bottom of the screen, and he moved on, not all that interested in hockey stats.

He stopped again when the live footage from Saint Petersburg, Russia caught his attention. With the volume on mute, he searched for the closed caption button and sat up, reading the news report while the station switched back and forth between the newscaster and images of the police surrounding a trolleybus in the middle of a downtown street. The reporter spoke of a bomb discovered during the busy morning rush hour, mere miles from the plaza where dozens had been killed on New Year’s Eve. Luckily a citizen had been paying attention, and the explosive device had been deactivated, stopping another disaster.

Early reports were suggesting that the same rebel group responsible for the December thirty-first bombing, Chechen Freedom, had attempted to strike again. The news segment switched to snippets of the video released weeks ago, shortly after the slaughter of innocent civilians, where the masked men promised more violence in retaliation for The Federation killing one of their leaders. The man pointed at the camera, vowing to continue with his plans to destroy Russia until the regime relented and gave the Chechens back their country.

Sighing, Collin rubbed at his jaw. Why did he feel like he was walking into a losing situation? Everyday there was something new going on over there. If it wasn’t bomb threats and anti-American rallies, it was anti-Putin demonstrations outside the Kremlin walls, which often ended with tear gas and riot gear. And he and Lyla were only hours away from their late-afternoon flight.

The issues in Saint Petersburg weren’t necessarily one of his concerns. The city was a good nine hours away from their destination. It was the possibility of terrorist attacks in Moscow and Russia’s discord with the United States in general that had him on edge. The fact that Lyla was a dual citizen of two countries at odds had the potential to work for her…or very much against her. Only time would tell which way things were going to go, and they would be along for the ride while they waited to figure it out.

 The Unofficial Finding Lyla Soundtrack

Music plays a HUGE part in my writing process. I typically listen to Pandora or YouTube while I create my stories and compile a collection of songs that I feel represent my characters or the situations they face as each novel unfolds. It’s a rare occasion that my creativity demands silence (And that’s a good thing. I’m a mother of two boys. Quiet doesn’t exist in my house.). I thought it would be fun to create a list of songs that ‘spoke’ to me while I wrote the Bodyguards of L.A. County series. You can listen to the “soundtrack” for each book on my website www.catebeauman.com.

The soundtrack, of sorts, for Finding Lyla:

  • Today by Steve Moakler
  • Beautiful Things by Gungor
  • Teneferie Sea by Ed Sheeran
  • Shut Up and Dance by Walk The Moon
  • Anywhere but Here by Safety Suit
  • Never Gonna Be Alone by Nickelback
  • Nirvana by Sam Smith
  • Don’t Deserve You by Plumb
  • Unconditionally by Katy Perry
  • You’re in Love by Taylor Swift
  • Fight Song by Rachel Platton

Excerpt Soul Unbound

Chapter One Excerpt

Bomani turned away from the reality of his mistakes and the sorrow settling deep in his soul. He would not allow Bast to see his pain, let alone feel the extent of his losses.

His home. His legion.

Life as he had always known it to be.

No, he would do whatever he damn well pleased.

His gaze strayed to the Protector goddess who cuffed the god with venom laced restraints. Bomani had no sympathy for the criminal. Not unlike himself, the exiler had as much chance of escape as a half-swallowed rodent from a serpent’s jaws.

Bomani had whored himself out to the Creation Pantheon. Servitude, the price for staying in the human realm, a place an underworlder did not belong.

“Where is the Destroyer?” Bast grabbed the prisoner’s jaw.

Bomani was grateful Bast’s attention was focused on the exiler and not him. His head swirled and pitched so he feared he would pass out. The smell of blood filled the air, tightening the cramp of hunger in his chest. His gums burned and his fangs threatened to descend. Only days out of the underworld, and he was already succumbing to the effects. He needed to get out of here and find something to silence his hunger. A five course meal or a soul would do just fine. To cover his distress, he leaned up against the cold brick of the building and crossed his arms over his chest.

“I asked you a question,” Bast hissed and dug her nails in deeper.

Bomani had heard Bast ask the same question of the last five exilers. Either her interrogation techniques sucked or they did not know the mark.

The prisoner chuckled through a strangled throat. “Even if I had seen the Destroyer, I am more afraid of her than I am of you.”

Her? Bomani slid his gaze to the goddess.

Bast glared at Bomani from the side. “Useless, all of you.” With a snap of her fingers a portal opened behind the exiler. She shoved the god through the vortex.

Bomani shielded his eyes before the portal snapped shut in a bright flash. Bast’s face burned a bright red and her brilliant green eyes glowered at him. She wiped her hands down the front of her dress. The golden glow of her fury rippled out in waves of heat.

He shoved off the wall and trudged down the street, not waiting for her dismissal or her excuse why it was all his fault.

“Where are you going?” Bast’s protest chased after him.

“Getting lost.”

“I am not finished with you, warrior.”

He pulled the hood up over his head and pushed onward.

“Bomani!” Bast screeched, shattering the windows above him. The glass shards showered down around him, penetrating his coat and skin. Dusting off his shoulder he rounded the corner of the alley. A bright white flash greeted him along with the slam of her palms into his chest.

“Have you forgotten the order of things, Commander? You are in my house. Follow my rules.”

“You have your exiler,” Bomani snapped, hating to see her anger abated and replaced by a look that soured his stomach.

She smiled and raked her unholy gaze down the front of him. “You have yet to fulfill our agreement. Until then, I own you.”

“You know as well as I that cannot happen.” He snatched and squeezed her wrist.

She flinched. The frigid temperature of his skin warred with the heat of hers. She jerked lose. A red imprint, the size of his palm, outlined her skin.

“Not going to happen,” Bomani said, fisting his burnt white palm.

“There are no absolutes. Conditions do change and you have little choice in the matter, unless you want to go back and face your Lord, Asar.”

Shame weighed down on Bomani. He had failed his father and betrayed the very principles he had pledged his life to serve. Worse, his jealousy drove him to hurt the woman he claimed to love. The very reason among many that drove him to this world.

“Do you think me powerless? That I cannot absolve your curse?” She slid her hand against his chest.

Curse was an apt description of the so called law. He was relegated to hide in the darkest shadows. Daylight promised an unbearable pain he avoided at all costs. A clear message from the Creations—the dead were not permitted among the living.

“For millenniums the Underworld has been subjugated to your rules and you, a Protector god, can wipe that all away?” He shoved her hand off his chest, not wanting to believe she could do it. His honor would not save him. Only this fine thread of incompatibility separated him from falling deeper into shame.

“Bomani, you have no other choice. I will not let you remain here unsupervised,” Bast said and proceeded to stroke his chest. “I did warn you from the beginning. Kendra was made for Bakari, not you. I have offered you a new life and something enjoyable in exchange. You have nothing to lose.”

His disgrace had driven him out of the Underworld and into a new master’s hands. His soul ached in his chest, resolved in the fact Bast was correct about one thing.

He had nothing worth losing.

“Fine.” He grabbed her arm and pushed her back against the wall, wanting to get this torturous deed done.

Bast shoved him back. “No! It will be a time and place of my choosing. In the meantime, I have another mark for you to find.”

Fury burned hotter in his gut. The fickle odjit was playing with him, like a cat with a mouse. Would her demands never cease?

He thought not.

“Who is it you want now?”

“An exiler has been living among the humans, evading final judgment.” Her bright green eyes sparkled with a challenge. “I want to know who she is consorting with and why.”

“Who is the mark?”

“Who she is, is none of your concern. Do what I ask, and we will meet again to discuss your safe passage here.”

“What does the goddess look like, and where in duat do I find this criminal?”

“Her last known location was here in this city.”

He ruefully chuckled. New York had more hiding places than a corn maze. “This is a gods’ damn big city. Care to be a little more specific. Hair and eye color? Her glyphs?”

“She is the only god living among humans. She carries the brand of an exiler. You are a master tracker. Use that so-called skill of yours and find her. Do not make contact. Do not underestimate her. I want intel. Is that clear, Commander?”

“Yeah, sure.” He stalked past the goddess and down the trash littered street before his voice betrayed his last thread of decency. Honestly, he cared not, but it would buy him time. He had few options at this point, and it was wholly better than bedding Bast.

“Do not make contact,” Bast called out.

He raised his two fingers in a mocking salute. His life had not hit rock bottom—yet.

Excerpt of Soul Awakened

Kendra commanded herself to march straight out the door. Enough of this bleeding heart stuff. If only she could take that next step toward freedom. She sighed heavily. Who was she fooling? She wasn’t going anywhere other than straight to his bed. Heck, she had bled, almost died, and ran naked into his frigid subconscious in less than twenty-four hours of knowing him.

She had no sense of self-preservation.

Bakari lay in the center of the enormous bed. The size of two kings put together. She couldn’t very well assess him from her vantage point. Climbing in bed with him uninvited caused her heart to flutter. What if Bomani walked in? How would she explain this?

Irritated with her thoughts, she stepped on the sideboard and hoisted herself on the thick plush mattress. The bed barely moved or compressed under her dainty weight. She didn’t want to wake him or least that was the plan.

Check on him and go. Yep.

Thankfully, he didn’t move as she crept closer on her hands and knees. His body contracted tighter and he shook his head against the covers. Maybe she could break the nightmare with a light touch. It seemed to lessen his pain before in his cell.

With her weight on her right hand and knees, she reached out and gently brushed his damp black hair out of his face. Surprisingly, it was soft and shiny now and all the white had faded. He must have washed it sometime before she arrived.

She moved her knees forward and sat back on her heels with her hands on her thighs. Too scared before to take in his features, she measured his face in an unrushed appreciation. His cheeks had filled out from last night. The muscles in his jaw twitched, as he clenched and unclenched his teeth in his sleep. His skin had warmed to an olive tone. Not bad for what little food he had eaten.

She traced the angle of his cheekbone to his full jaw with her fingertip. He had Asar’s facial structure. Her finger stopped at his chin. She mentally traced the line of his mouth. His lips were perfect in size and shape. She pressed her lips together and wet them with her tongue.

Startled, she snapped her gaze away. Why the heck was she wondering what it would be like to kiss him? She had really lost her marbles. A virgin, but not a saint? Bad girl, she scolded herself. Now as she looked at herself kneeling uninvited on a man’s bed while he slept, it seemed even dirtier. She needed to have her head examined.

Holding her breath, she placed her palms on the mattress and pushed away toward the edge of the bed. She was getting the heck out of here. Her toes breached the outer seam.

A low growl preceded large hands clamping on her shoulders and flipping her in the air. The ceiling and black silk sheets flashed in her field of view before her back found the mattress and her head flopped into the pillow. She yelped as Bakari’s hard male body pressed her firmly into the padding. In one hand he pinned her wrists above her head. Despite being severely underweight, his torso and pelvis heavily restrained her.

“Did you see something you did not like, Parvana?”

The Run-Away Couple by Maggie Tideswell

It is said that the maid-of-honor and the best-man are the most likely to have sex on the wedding night. Add a love-hate relationship and throw a couple of ghosts into the mix, and you have the Run-Away Couple.

Eloise chose a Gothic themed wedding for her and Dane, complete with remote setting, flickering candles, flaming torches and shadows, all geared towards scaring the guests. The stormy weather and swirling mists were a bonus.

But the person most scared was the maid-of-honor, the bride’s elder sister, Piper. She didn’t do creep. And she had been lumped together for the night of the wedding with Marcus, the best-man and the bane of Piper’s teenage life.

He was a prankster of renown when they were growing up. As the boy-next-door, he singled Piper out for the best he could come up with. She didn’t trust him then and she didn’t trust him now. As the run-away couple, would they follow the traditional path? Or would Piper’s dislike and mistrust of Marcus win out?

The story of the ghost develops throughout the series and only in book 5 the full story behind the haunting is revealed.

Set in South Africa, The Run-Away Couple is the first book in a set of steamy romances about bridesmaids, weddings and honeymoons that will appeal to the young and the young at heart alike.

Book 2, He’s Married, will be available in August 2015.

About the Author

Mom

Maggie Tideswell is an author of erotic paranormal romance.

Wow! So is everybody else.

What sets Maggie apart is that she writes from a South African perspective, because that is where she lives with her husband, Gareth and their three cats.

When asked why she writes in the paranormal, her answer was that paranormal, things unexplained, is all around us, whether we acknowledge it or not. And romance is everywhere too. It is love, not money, that makes the world go round.

New Release: Modern Magics, Book 3 by Maer Wilson

Magics ebook 400x600

Magics, Modern Magics, Book 3

In Relics, the creatures of magic returned to Earth.

In Portals, magic itself returned.

In Magics, we’ll wish it hadn’t.

The laws of magic have become as real as the laws of physics, and humans with magical powers are becoming the norm.

But human magic is out of control – powerful, wild, unpredictable. Five ultra-powerful humans rise above the rest to begin a reign of terror, and entire cities fall. The elves and other Elder Races are desperate to find and stop these magical terrorists. But for the first time, the magic of the Elder Races is surpassed.

Thulu and La Fi join the hunt for the human supes causing the planet-wide massacres. With their own magic evolving and erratic, the race to catch the killers becomes far more difficult. They need to find them and stop the chaos before there is no world left to save.

Five Stars for The Modern Magics Series

The books trace what happens when magic returns to Earth, as seen through the eyes of paranormal detectives, Thulu and La Fi.

The Modern Magics Stories are set prior to the main events in Relics, Book1 and involve some of the couple’s more interesting cases.

Excerpt from Magics, Modern Magics, Book 3

The dead girl jumped as the series of explosions rocked our office. To tell the truth, so did Thulu and I. My husband and I exchanged a long look as the sounds of shrieking and groaning from metal and concrete giants shattered the morning. The time had come. My heart fell, and I felt tears threaten.

There were only those few moments of regret before the lights flickered and went out. The skylight allowed us to see each other, so Thulu and I moved quickly.

“This is it,” I said to Thulu, my heart pounding. I shook my head regretfully at our client. “I’m sorry. Things are going to be bad for a while. I’m not sure we will be able to take your case for some time.”

Blanche Nielsen sat in the chair before our desks, blond hair swinging as her head swiveled between the two of us. The look of alarm still on her slightly transparent face.

“What do you mean?”

Thulu snatched up Carter, our three-year-old son, from where he was coloring. Carter looked from Thulu to me, his small face showing alarm, but we had made sure to prepare him for this as much as we could. He didn’t say anything, just wrapped his arms around Thulu’s neck.

Thulu glanced at Blanche as he stuffed a few favorite toys into Carter’s messenger bag. “We’ve been expecting something to happen. You see, our whole solar system is moving through an area of space where magic has become real. Things are going to get crazy for a while.” He paused as he glanced around the office and shouldered the bag. “The dead should be fine, but we won’t be able to help anyone out until things settle down.”

During his explanation, I quickly grabbed our tablets and stuffed them into my own bag. I picked up our puppy, Treya, attaching her leash before putting her in the pet travel bag. In less than a minute, we moved to the back door, trailed forlornly by our dead client.

We moved smoothly, in spite of not having practiced our evacuation. However, our plan of action had been in place, and we knew what needed to be done.

We went through our small storage area, but it was dim without the skylight. At the back door, Thulu turned to hand Carter to me. My son’s arms went around my neck clinging tightly. I reached up to loosen them as Parker popped in, eyes huge with what I thought might be shock, but his jaw was clenched with determination. The young ghost had more substance to him than our new client. A client we might never be able to help.

“Be careful opening the door,” Parker said, just as the ghosts of my grandmother, Nana Fae, and Thulu’s mother, Mama Deb, materialized.

“How bad is it?” Thulu asked.

“Bad,” said Mama Deb at the same time Nana Fae spoke.

“Awful.”
