As you know, I’m a huge Ancient Egyptian mythology buff. Heck, I’m consumed about writing about their gods, so when Virginia Nelson asked me to interview Gabriel, the hero from her novel, Eternal Lovers from the Sekhmet’s Guardians series, I could not refuse her. Okay, your probably wondering what’s the Egyptian angle here. Excuse me while I turn on my inner geek. Well– Sekhmet is the lion-headed goddess, one of the most ancient gods. The goddess of war, pestilence and destruction. She developed a fairly bad reputation for blood lust, but even this goddess can be sated with a spiked drink. Eventually, she was celebrated as the protector and healer of the people. I won’t mention that she is the focus of the next book in the Key to the Cursed series. Yes, I think Virginia and I are kindred spirits.
Virginia has put her own unique spin on the Sekhmet Myth. This is the first book in the series and sure to set the pace for subsequent books.
First, let me introduce Author Virginia Nelson.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
V.S. Nelson has always enjoyed reading stories with strong relationships and happy endings so it’s not surprising she found herself writing across the romance genre. Even her commercial fiction, Sins of a Man, the memoirs of a Mafia Hit man, is layered with romantic elements.
Landing in Arizona, after an exciting teaching career, which took her to the Middle East for several years, she lives in Arizona where she spend most of my time making love to her computer while writing, editing or researching, seven to ten hours a day. The days she’s not writing, you will find her with my critique partners at Starbucks, attending or presenting a workshop or at a RWA meeting.
Being a Native American woman and a Scorpio, she’s always had a fondness for history, mythology, the occult, and the unexplained events which have occurred on this world we call home. It was no wonder she found herself writing a paranormal series.
She enjoys hearing from readers, fans and people with similar interests. They are more than welcome to contact her through her website http://www.authorvsnelson.com
Today, we get to interview Gabriel, the hero of Eternal Lovers.
Gabriel, I want to welcome you today to Author Open MIC. I was excited to hear from Virginia that you have knowledge of Ancient Egypt. It’s an interest of mine. You have been there. What was it like?
Thank you for inviting me. I can tell you are definitely a journalist…jumping right in with the questions. What was it like? (laughs, our loud) Well, ancient Egypt was alright if you are at home without modern-day conveniences like indoor plumbing, flushable toilets and electricity. All kidding aside, (Gabriel closes his eyes and the corners of his mouth turn upward as if he is remembering something pleasant) … what I remember the most is not the inconveniences but the smell of jasmine and orange blossoms scenting the cool night air, the smell of the rich unearthed soil along both sides of the Nile River, the sound of children laughing as they spent endless hours playing while their mother prepares their meals. There is nothing like fresh made bread. The sound of fishermen casting their nets out upon the water is mixed with the thunder of horse hooves hammering down the loose sand. (Gabriel reopens his eyes) Sorry, got kind of carried away. Next question?
What brought your kind here to Earth? Are there more like you?
I was a member of Sekhmet’s elite forces, the Guardians, on our home world, New Tuat, when she asked for volunteers for a special mission. I and six other stepped forward without knowing what was involved with the mission. She led us through a portal between your world and ours where we ended up in ancient Egypt. We’ve been here since – still trying to track down the followers of Set’s Legions. Sadly, they multiply like roaches… More like me? Not sure what you’re asking exactly, (he winks and smiles). Those of us that came through the portal are still here – all seven of us and our descendent which make up the members of the Guardian Nation.
What is your position at Guardians, Inc.? Why does the protection agency exist?
You sure like those double questions, don’t you? I’m the Director of Guardians, Inc. Around a hundred years ago, we, my brethren and I, decided it was the politically correct thing to do so we created Guardians Inc. where we could operate openly in your world. No longer hiding in the shadows we protect those that need our services. Our clients range from rock stars to embassies to the less fortunate.
What do we need to be afraid of?
The followers of Set’s Legions. They too came from our world but do not see humans as we do. They would just as soon turn the human race into their private feeding lot.
So how are your guardians trained? Do they use a specific fighting style?
Our recruits, both human and immortal, go through a rigorous training program, boot camp if you will. Depending on where they excel and where their services are needed they will take advances courses in everything from martial arts to explosives.
How old are you, really? Does age matter in your organization?
I quit celebrating birthdays a very long time ago. Let’s just say I’m somewhere between 5,000 and 6,000 years old–give or take a few, and leave it at that.
Do you have any limitations? Any you would admit to anyways.
I wouldn’t call it a limitation – more like a weakness and that would be Jennifer.
Virginia stated you are a private person, but do have significant other or does your job prevent getting close to anyone?
I am. I spent close to six thousand years alone. That was until recently. Think I better keep my mouth shut or I’ll spoil the events in the book, Eternal Lovers and then I will have to deal with Virginia.
So tell us about a little about Virginia. I hear she is your biggest fan.
Fan? I’d hardly call her a fan I think it’s more like I’m the thorn in her side or the pain in her ass.
What is Guardian’s Inc. next mission? What can readers expect?
Can’t really tell you too many details, mission top-secret and all that. But, what I can tell you is one of the Legion members resurrected four of Set’s original Primes, Set’s personal guards who came to Earth and started this God forsaken war. They are hell-bent on destroying the human race and taking over this planet and we aim to stop them–come Hell or high water.
Where can readers find you? (links, purchase and social media)
You can find me and my brethren along with a lot of good-looking women on Virginia’s website.
http://www.authorvsnelson.com in addition to (insert buy links). Every now and then V lets me post on her fb author page http://www.facebook.com/authorvsnelson. From what I understand we will all be attending the Arizona Dreamin’ conference http://arizonadreamin.wordpress.com/ and the http://romancenovelconvention.com/ in August of next year. I know V is planning on dragging us to a few book signings across the country but I haven’t the foggiest idea where all those are going to take place. You might want to ask my brother, Lance, the computer geek, he should have a listing or visit V’s website to get the dates and places.
Open MIC fav five: (For Gabriel)
- Favorite hero or heroine – Jennifer, of course.
- Favorite author – Think I better say V.S.Nelson. Don’t tell V, I also read J.R. Ward and Lara Adrian.
- Favorite music – Love old classic rock.
- Favorite inspiration – Not sure what you’re asking here but I would have to say now that I have met Jennifer, well lets just say she inspires me to be more than I am, more than I have ever been.
- Most memorable moment – Goddess knows I’ve got a ton of those but I would have to say the first moment I laid eyes on Jennifer, our wedding night and the day I took Bagsu’s head.
When two hidden worlds collide near modern-day Lake Michigan, Jennifer, a young Native American, is confronted with the reality, not everything is as it seems and things do go bump in the night. The questions she has long since asked are answered in this epic tale of self discovery when she meets Gabriel, the director of Guardians Incorporated.
Born in New Tuat, Netchkhet, now known as Gabriel came to Earth some five thousand years ago to protect the human race.
Disillusioned by an unfulfilled prophecy, he has become cold and distant – even from those of his kind. He secretly waits for his enemy to take his head so he may leave this world for good.
Can a tiny Selkie melt his hardened heart and restore his faith in a power far greater than himself?
When history repeats itself, can he save her from death’s embrace or will they be robbed of a future again?
Insert taken from Chapter Five – Eternal Lovers (Setting – making her escape from Gabriel’s penetrating eyes, Jennifer is standing at the bar when she feels something on her neck.)
She was warmed by the drink, then instantly chilled to her bone when she felt a breath of air on her neck.
A deep voice whispered, “You smell delicious, good enough to eat.”
She turned to find the dark-haired stranger leaning against her, his mouth upon her neck. Not knowing what to do, she took both hands and pushed against his chest as hard as she could, yelling, “Get the fuck away from me!”
Marching right past him she headed back to the billiard room. She stomped up to Raphael, grabbed hold of his hand, pulling him into the other room.
“Ah… Ah… Jennifer, where are we going?”
Looking around, she realized she had drug Raphael to the one room, now empty of furniture, set aside for dancing. They were standing in the center of the room with couples dancing all around them. She reached up and put both of her hands around Raphael’s neck and demanded, “Dance with me.”
Puzzled as he must have been, he placed his hands on the small of her back and began swaying with her to the music. She laid her head against his chest. God, it felt good being so close to him–safe.
“You know all you had to do was ask. I’d never turn down a lady in distress. I’m flattered but curious as to what brought all this on?”
“I guess I’m just over reacting, but there was a guy in there…” She motioned with her head towards the other room. “…who was giving me the creeps. Evidently, he was staring at me while I was playing backgammon with Alice; well at least that’s what Marie said.”
“Jennifer, I’m sure you are use to having men stare at you. You are a beautiful woman. I believe I told you earlier you look enchantingly beautiful tonight.”
She blushed. Raphael could charm anyone.
“It wasn’t just that he was staring at me. I left the room and went to get a drink and the next thing I knew he was leaning into me. He had me pinned against the bar. Lord, I swear he was sniffing my hair. I don’t know if he’s drunk, high or what but he really scared the living daylights out of me.”
“Oh I see… and now you want the security guard and all this time I thought it was my charm that held you captive? I thought maybe you missed me… So what did this would be stalker look like?”
“Yes, no, hell I don’t know, all I could think of was finding you.”
“Jennifer, what did he look like, I’ll go find him and have a few words with him. If he’s drunk or on drugs, I’ll escort him out of here. I can’t have one of Alice’s guests being all upset. Now can I?”
Racing through her memory she tried to picture him in her mind. She couldn’t tell Raphael that he was a delectable yet scary looking hunk with the most intriguing eyes she had ever seen, could she?
“He’s dark haired, yeah black hair, really tall, taller than you, oh yeah, and he’s wearing a black suit with a black shirt and of all things sunglasses. He came to the party with four girls. I think maybe he’s a pimp?”
